Askøy

Askøy is a municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It encompasses the island of Askøy and several smaller islets, lying immediately north of the city of Bergen and forming part of the Bergen region. The main populated area is on the southern part of the island, with Kleppestø serving as the administrative centre. Since 2020, Askøy has been part of Vestland county following the merger of Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane.

Geography and settlement patterns are characterized by a coastal, varied landscape with forested hills, small farms, and numerous inlets and bays. The southern coast near Kleppestø is the most densely settled, while the northern parts are more sparsely populated. The island is connected to the mainland by the Askøy Bridge, a fixed link that provides road access and has helped integrate Askøy into the Bergen urban area. Previously, ferries served the main routes between Kleppestø and the mainland.

History and administration: Askøy municipality was established in the 19th century and has since developed from a rural community into a suburban municipality with a growing resident population. Local services, education, and infrastructure are managed by the municipal council, which elects the mayor.

Economy and transportation: The local economy blends services, small businesses, and commuting to Bergen. A substantial portion of residents work in Bergen, while retail, schools, and municipal services support the community. In addition to the fixed bridge, bus connections and local ferries provide public transport options.
