Askelsähköisyys

Askelsähköisyys, also known as triboelectricity, is an electrostatic phenomenon that occurs when two different materials come into contact and then separate. This charging process results from the transfer of electrons between the surfaces of the materials. The direction and magnitude of the charge transfer depend on the specific materials involved and their positions on the triboelectric series, which ranks materials based on their tendency to gain or lose electrons.

When two objects rub against each other, friction can cause electrons to be dislodged from one object and transferred to the other. The object that loses electrons becomes positively charged, while the object that gains electrons becomes negatively charged. This phenomenon is commonly observed in everyday situations, such as when you shuffle your feet on a carpet and then touch a doorknob, or when a balloon rubs against hair. The static electricity generated can cause a small spark or a noticeable cling between the objects.

The underlying mechanism of askelsähköisyys is related to the different electron affinities of the materials. Materials with a higher electron affinity tend to attract electrons, while those with lower electron affinity tend to lose them. The greater the difference in electron affinity between two materials, the stronger the charge transfer and the more pronounced the electrostatic effect. This principle is utilized in various applications, including electrostatic precipitators for air purification and some types of sensors.
