Artikkulatorisk (articulatory) refers to the study of how speech sounds are produced by the vocal tract. In linguistics, it investigates the actions of the articulators—lips, tongue, teeth, palate, velum, and glottis—and how their movements create phonemes through place and manner of articulation, voicing, and coarticulation.

The field considers phonetic gestures, the timing and coordination of movements, and cross-linguistic variation in articulatory settings. It distinguishes articulatory descriptions from acoustic descriptions, though the two areas are closely linked, and it underpins theories such as articulatory phonology. Researchers seek to describe how language-specific sounds are built in real-time, and how different contexts influence articulatory patterns.

Methods used to study artikkulatorisk data include imaging and measurement technologies such as electromagnetic articulography, ultrasound tongue imaging, electropalatography, palatography, and magnetic resonance imaging, as well as kinematic analysis of video recordings and synchronized audio. These techniques produce data about tongue shape, lip rounding, jaw movement, and other gestures, informing models of speech production and speech disorders.

Applications of artikkulatorisk research span speech synthesis and recognition, language teaching, and speech-language pathology, where understanding articulation supports diagnosis and therapy for articulation disorders and helps improve pronunciation training and clinical assessment. In Nordic linguistic usage, the term artikkulatorisk or artikulatorisk is used to describe the articulatory aspect of speech production and appears in descriptive grammars and phonetic studies.
