Armspiralitet

Armspiralitet, also known as arm spiral or spiral arm, is a phenomenon observed in the arms of spiral galaxies, including our own Milky Way. It refers to the pattern of stars, gas, and dust that forms a spiral structure, extending outward from the galaxy's center. This structure is not static but is dynamic, with stars and gas moving along the spiral arms due to the gravitational forces within the galaxy.

The spiral arms are thought to be the result of density waves, which move through the galaxy at a different speed than the stars and gas within them. These density waves compress the interstellar medium, triggering the formation of new stars. As a result, the spiral arms appear brighter and more densely populated with stars compared to the regions between the arms.

The exact cause of spiral arm formation is still a topic of ongoing research in astrophysics. However, it is generally accepted that the gravitational interactions between the galaxy and its satellite galaxies, as well as the internal dynamics of the galaxy, play a significant role in shaping and maintaining the spiral structure.
