Armhebungsbereich

Armhebungsbereich is a term used to describe the armpit region, the area where the upper limb meets the thorax. In anatomy, this zone is often referred to as the axillary region. It comprises skin, subcutaneous tissue, sweat glands, and hair, as well as important neurovascular and lymphatic structures that pass from the trunk into the arm.

Anatomical boundaries and contents

The axillary region has a defined set of boundaries: the anterior wall formed mainly by the pectoralis major and pectoralis minor muscles; the posterior wall by the subscapularis, teres major, and latissimus dorsi; the medial wall by the upper thoracic wall and serratus anterior; the lateral wall by the intertubercular sulcus of the humerus; and the apex at the cervicoaxillary canal bordered by the clavicle, first rib, and scapula. The base of the region is the skin and fascia that form the armpit. Inside this space lie the axillary artery and vein, branches of the brachial plexus, and axillary lymph nodes, along with adipose tissue and varying amounts of connective tissue.

Clinical and practical aspects

The Armhebungsbereich plays a key role in lymphatic drainage of the upper limb and chest, making it a focal point for conditions such as lymphadenopathy, infections, and, in some cases, metastasis from breast tissue. Clinically, the area is examined for signs of swelling, warmth, or tenderness. In clothing and ergonomics, the armpit area influences sleeve design, ease of movement, and comfort, informing measurements and cutting approaches for garments.
