Armbågsleden

Armbågsleden, or the elbow joint in English, is a complex hinge joint formed by the articulation of three bones in the upper limb: the humerus (upper arm bone), the ulna (one of the forearm bones), and the radius (the other forearm bone). This joint is crucial for allowing a wide range of motion in the arm, including flexion (bending) and extension (straightening), as well as pronation and supination of the forearm, which are the movements that turn the palm downwards and upwards respectively.

The elbow joint is a synovial joint, meaning it is enclosed within a capsule filled with synovial fluid that lubricates the articulating surfaces, reducing friction. The capsule is further reinforced by ligaments, such as the ulnar collateral ligament and the radial collateral ligament, which provide stability to the joint. The muscles surrounding the elbow, including the biceps brachii, triceps brachii, brachialis, brachioradialis, pronator teres, and supinator, are responsible for generating the forces needed for movement.

Injuries to the armbågsleden can range from sprains and strains to fractures and dislocations. Common conditions affecting the elbow include tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis), which are forms of tendonitis caused by overuse. Arthritis can also affect the elbow joint, leading to pain and stiffness. Understanding the anatomy and biomechanics of the armbågsleden is essential for diagnosing and treating these various conditions.
