Arkhadas is a fictional city-state widely featured in speculative fiction and role-playing games. Located on a crescent coastal plain along the eastern shore of the continent of Valtara, it functions as a major mercantile hub with a busy harbor and a cosmopolitan population. Its geography includes estuarine channels, quays, and a low inland ridge that houses administrative districts.

History of Arkhadas traces its origins to a 12th‑century confederation of merchant guilds that coalesced into the Archonate, a council-led political model. The city reached its commercial zenith in the 14th through 16th centuries, controlling key sea lanes and redistributing goods between inland markets and overseas connections. It endured political tensions and external pressures in the 17th and 18th centuries, followed by modernization in the 19th and 20th centuries and a contemporary governance framework anchored by guild representation and municipal institutions.

Government and politics: The head of state is the Archon, elected by the Council of Guildmasters for fixed terms. The council, with seats for trade, craft, and maritime associations, governs taxation, infrastructure, and external relations.
