Rather than copying a single feature, the concept encompasses strategies for building robust, adaptable systems by mimicking the hierarchical organization, resilience, and network-like structures observed in spider silk and webs.

The term is not tied to a specific technology but to a family of principles. Researchers study the exceptional toughness and lightness of spider silk, as well as how spiders assemble complex, fault-tolerant webs, to inform synthetic fibers, lattice structures, and robotic architectures. The emphasis is on scalable design that preserves function under damage or changing loads.

Key principles include hierarchical design from nano- to macro-scale, controlled stiffness and damping, energy-efficient load distribution, and modularity that allows components to be replaced or reconfigured. Some variants explore reversible adhesion, grip, or surface interactions inspired by spider biomechanics.

Applications span robotics (legged and hybrid locomotion with resilient skins), materials (synthetic silk-like fibers and tough composites), architecture (lightweight lattice shells and adaptable grids), and textiles or medical devices (high-strength, breathable fabrics and adhesives).
