Approximanti

Approximanti is a term used in linguistics to describe sounds that are produced with a narrowing of the vocal tract but without complete closure or frication. These sounds are often referred to as semivowels or glides. They share characteristics of both vowels and consonants. Approximants are typically realized by moving the articulators close together, allowing air to flow smoothly between them without producing audible turbulence.

The primary approximants in English are the sounds represented by 'y' in "yes" and 'w' in "wet." These are often called glides because of their transitional nature; they typically appear before or after a vowel and often glide into the vowel. The 'y' sound is a palatal approximant, produced with the tongue raised towards the hard palate, while the 'w' sound is a labial-velar approximant, involving lip rounding and the back of the tongue raised towards the velum.

Other languages have a wider range of approximants. For instance, the 'j' in Spanish "yo" is a palatal approximant, and some languages have lateral approximants, where the airflow is unobstructed in the center of the mouth but passes over the sides of the tongue, such as the 'l' sound in "light" when it occurs in certain contexts. The key feature of all approximants is the smooth, non-turbulent airflow during their production. They are often considered sonorant consonants due to their vowel-like acoustic properties.
