Apo2L, also known as TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), is a transmembrane protein belonging to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily. It plays a crucial role in the induction of apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death, in various cell types. Apo2L is expressed by immune cells and other tissues, and it binds to specific death receptors on target cells, initiating intracellular signaling cascades that lead to apoptosis.

The interaction between Apo2L and its receptors is a key mechanism for eliminating damaged, infected, or unwanted cells, thus maintaining tissue homeostasis and immune surveillance. While Apo2L can induce apoptosis in a wide range of cancer cells, it generally spares most normal cells, making it a promising target for cancer therapy.
