Aphyllum

Aphyllum is a genus of flowering plants in the family Aphyllanthaceae, native to South Africa. The genus is characterized by its unique, leaf-like structures that are actually modified stems, known as cladodes. These cladodes are often arranged in a rosette pattern at the base of the plant, giving the appearance of a rosette of leaves. The true leaves are reduced to small, scale-like structures.

Aphyllum plants are known for their striking flowers, which are typically bell-shaped and can be a variety of colors, including white, pink, red, and yellow. The flowers are usually fragrant and are produced on tall, slender stems that emerge from the rosette of cladodes. The flowers are often self-pollinating, but can also be pollinated by insects.

Aphyllum plants are often grown as ornamental plants in gardens and nurseries. They are relatively easy to care for, preferring well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. They are also drought-tolerant once established, making them a good choice for xeriscaping.

The genus Aphyllum is monotypic, containing only one species, Aphyllum leptophyllum. This species is native to the Western Cape province of South Africa, where it grows in a variety of habitats, including fynbos and renosterveld. The plant is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, but is threatened by habitat loss and degradation.
