An aphrodisiac is a substance claimed to increase sexual desire, arousal, or performance. The term, derived from the Greek goddess Aphrodite, is used in many cultures to describe foods, herbs, and other agents thought to boost libido. In practice, effects are variable, and at times the label covers items whose primary action is nutritional or psychological rather than pharmacological.

Common examples include foods such as oysters and chocolate, as well as herbs and supplements like ginseng, maca, horny goat weed, and yohimbine. Some products are marketed as pheromones or synthetic fragrances. It is important to distinguish these from medications that treat erectile dysfunction; the latter have established indications and regulated dosing.

Evidence for most traditional aphrodisiacs is weak or inconsistent. Some pharmacologically active items show modest effects in specific contexts: yohimbine may increase sympathetic activity and erectile responses in some individuals but carries risks; maca and ginseng have reported small benefits in studies with variable quality. A large portion of claimed aphrodisiac effects is attributed to placebo and cultural expectations.

Safety and regulation are variable. Dietary supplements are not uniformly regulated and may interact with medications or medical conditions; adverse effects range from gastrointestinal upset to hypertension or heart rhythm disturbances. Consumers should be cautious, verify product quality, and consult healthcare providers before use, especially when taking prescriptions or having chronic illnesses.

In cultural contexts, aphrodisiacs have appeared throughout history—from culinary traditions to traditional medicine—often linked to romance, ritual, and social norms. Modern discussions emphasize evidence-based evaluation and the distinction between libido enhancement and sexual performance.
