Aouzou

Aouzou is a geographical area located in northern Chad. It is primarily known for the Aouzou Strip, a disputed territory that was a focal point of conflict between Chad and Libya for several decades. The strip, believed to be rich in mineral resources, particularly uranium, was a source of significant tension and several military confrontations.

The dispute over the Aouzou Strip began in the 1970s, with Libya asserting historical claims and asserting control over the territory. Chad contested these claims, leading to a protracted period of instability. The Chadian–Libyan conflict involved direct military engagements and proxy warfare, with both nations vying for influence and control. International mediation efforts were undertaken to resolve the dispute.

In 1994, the International Court of Justice ruled in favor of Chad, officially recognizing its sovereignty over the Aouzou Strip. Following this ruling, Libyan forces withdrew from the territory. Although the territorial dispute has been resolved, the legacy of the conflict and the historical significance of the Aouzou Strip remain. The area is sparsely populated and its development has been impacted by the years of conflict.
