Anushirwans

Anushirwans, also known as the "Immortals," were an elite Persian infantry unit in the Sasanian Empire, particularly during the reign of Khosrow I (r. 531-579 AD), whose name "Anushirwan" they bore. This highly disciplined and well-trained corps was renowned for its bravery and effectiveness on the battlefield.

The Anushirwans were characterized by their distinctive armor, often described as heavy mail, and their weaponry, which typically included spears, swords, and bows. They formed the core of the Sasanian army and were often deployed in critical engagements. Their formation and tactics were designed to withstand enemy charges and to break through enemy lines. The unit's loyalty and dedication were also noted, contributing to their fearsome reputation.

While the term "Immortals" suggests an unending supply of soldiers, it more accurately reflected their perceived invincibility and the expectation that they would fight to the death. The Anushirwans were a symbol of Sasanian military might and a key factor in the empire's success in numerous conflicts against Byzantium and other rivals.
