Antytonimy

Antytonimy are pairs of words in a language that have opposite meanings. In English linguistic usage the standard term is antonyms, while antytonimy is the Polish-language term used to denote the same semantic relation. Antonymy is a fundamental aspect of lexical semantics, contributing to contrast, sense differentiation, and expressive precision in discourse and lexicographic work.

Etymology and scope: The concept derives from the Greek roots anti- meaning opposite and onoma meaning name, via the English term antonym. In Polish linguistic references, antytonimy describe the same relationship between words with opposite senses. Antonymy can involve different degrees of opposition and depends on sense context.

Types and examples: Antonyms are commonly categorized into gradable, complementary, and relational (converses) antonyms. Gradable pairs differ along a spectrum, such as large–small, hot–cold, or bright–dim, allowing intermediate states. Complementary antonyms are binary opposites with no overlap, such as alive–dead, true–false, or open–closed. Relational antonyms describe reciprocal roles, such as buy–sell, parent–child, or teacher–student, where the existence of one term implies the other.

Usage and properties: Antonyms are used to express contrast, form definitional boundaries, and enrich discourse.
