Antiöstrogene

Antiöstrogene, also known as antiestrogens or estrogen antagonists, are a group of drugs that inhibit the synthesis or biological activity of estrogen. They are widely used in medicine, primarily for the treatment of hormone-sensitive breast cancer. These compounds work by blocking the effects of estrogen on the body, thereby preventing the growth and proliferation of cancer cells that rely on estrogen for their development.

There are several classes of antiöstrogene. Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) like tamoxifen and raloxifene bind to estrogen receptors and can act as either agonists or antagonists depending on the target tissue. Aromatase inhibitors, such as anastrozole and letrozole, prevent the conversion of androgens to estrogens in peripheral tissues.

Beyond breast cancer treatment, antiöstrogene find applications in managing infertility, treating gynecomastia in men, and in certain cases of endometriosis. However, their use can also be associated with side effects, which vary depending on the specific drug and individual patient. These can include hot flashes, fatigue, and an increased risk of blood clots. Medical supervision is crucial when using antiöstrogene to monitor efficacy and manage potential adverse reactions.
