Antitestet

Antitestet is a term used in some Scandinavian scholarly contexts to denote a test that is specifically designed to challenge a claim by seeking counter-evidence or a counterexample. It emphasizes efforts to disprove rather than merely support a hypothesis, highlighting the role of refutation in evidentiary reasoning.

Linguistically, the word combines anti- with test, and in Norwegian and related languages it appears as the definite form of antitest. In practice, antitestet is used to describe testing approaches that probe the limits of a claim, aiming to expose conditions under which the claim would fail.

In philosophy of science and statistics, an antitest is described as a procedure intended to falsify a hypothesis rather than confirm it. It stresses examining the claim under potential counterconditions or alternative data that could reveal the claim’s weaknesses. A robust antitest typically includes explicit refutation criteria, preregistered hypotheses about what would disprove the claim, and measures to prevent bias in interpretation.
