Antimeason

Antimeason is a term used to describe individuals or groups who are opposed to Freemasonry. This opposition can stem from various historical, religious, or political concerns. Historically, some religious denominations have viewed Freemasonry with suspicion, believing its rituals and oaths are incompatible with their faith. Others have accused Freemasonry of being a secret society that wields undue influence in government or society.

The origins of anti-Masonic sentiment can be traced back to the late 18th century. Concerns were often raised about the secrecy surrounding Masonic meetings and the alleged oaths of secrecy taken by its members. These fears were amplified during periods of political upheaval, such as the French Revolution, where Freemasonry was sometimes associated with revolutionary movements, and conversely, with counter-revolutionary conspiracies.

In the United States, the Anti-Masonic Party emerged in the 1820s and 1830s, fueled by a perceived conspiracy related to the disappearance of William Morgan, a former Mason. This party advocated for public opposition to Freemasonry and even nominated a presidential candidate. While the Anti-Masonic Party eventually dissolved, anti-Masonic sentiments have persisted in various forms throughout history and in different parts of the world. Modern anti-Masonic viewpoints can be found in certain religious circles, political ideologies, and online conspiracy theories. These criticisms often focus on alleged hidden agendas, occult practices, or undemocratic structures within the organization.
