Antibioottiryhmä refers to a classification of antibiotics based on their chemical structure and mechanism of action. Antibiotics are broadly categorized into different groups, and each group contains drugs that share similar properties. Understanding these groups is crucial for effective antibiotic treatment and for managing antibiotic resistance.

One of the largest and most widely used antibiotic groups is the beta-lactams. This group includes penicillins and cephalosporins, characterized by a beta-lactam ring in their chemical structure. They work by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, making them effective against a wide range of bacterial infections. Another significant group is the macrolides, such as erythromycin and azithromycin. These antibiotics interfere with bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the bacterial ribosome.

Fluoroquinolones, like ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, form another important group. They target bacterial DNA replication by inhibiting enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Aminoglycosides, including gentamicin and streptomycin, also target bacterial protein synthesis but by binding to the bacterial ribosome in a different way than macrolides. Tetracyclines, such as doxycycline, are another class that inhibits protein synthesis.

The classification into antibiotic groups helps clinicians choose the most appropriate antibiotic for a specific infection, considering factors like the type of bacteria involved, the patient's allergies, and potential side effects. It also aids in the development of new antibiotics and in understanding how bacteria develop resistance to different drug classes.
