Antibes

Antibes is a commune on the French Riviera in the Alpes-Maritimes department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. It lies between Nice to the west and Cannes to the east, with the nearby seaside district of Juan-les-Pins. The commune of Antibes–Juan-les-Pins encompasses the historic town and the resort area, which together form a major tourist destination.

The old town, Vieille Ville, is largely surrounded by 16th‑century ramparts and preserves narrow medieval lanes, a Provencal market, and waterfront views of the port. The Fort Carré, a star‑shaped fortress dating from the late 16th century, stands at the edge of the city walls. Port Vauban is a large marina that serves leisure boats and visiting yachts and is a focal point for Mediterranean maritime traffic. The Cap d’Antibes peninsula to the east is known for its villas and the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, as well as beaches such as La Gravette and La Garoupe.

Antibes has a prominent cultural presence. The Château Grimaldi houses the Musée Picasso, where works Picasso created during his stay in 1946–47 are displayed. The old town’s markets and promenades also attract visitors. The Jazz à Juan festival, held in nearby Juan-les-Pins, is one of Europe’s oldest jazz events.

Historically, the area was a Greek settlement called Antipolis, later part of the Roman world. It became part of the French state in 1860 with the incorporation of the County of Nice. Today, tourism and yachting are the city’s principal economic activities, supported by rail and road connections to Nice and Cannes.
