Anness

Anness is a fictional town and civil parish in the northern province of Valeria. Located on the Anness River, it lies about 25 kilometers north of Hallow and serves as a local service center for surrounding rural communities.

The name appears in medieval manuscripts; its origin is uncertain, with some scholars linking it to an Old Valerian word for a river crossing. The town covers roughly 12 square kilometers and combines a historic core with newer residential neighborhoods.

Anness formed around a river crossing in the 12th century. It gained a market charter in the 14th century and grew with the railway era in the 19th century. Modern governance and services expanded in the late 20th century.

Population is about 7,500. The economy mixes agriculture, light manufacturing and services, including retail and tourism tied to the river and historical sites. The community is primarily Valerian- and English-speaking.

Key landmarks include St. Mary's Church, Anness Gate, and Riverside Park. The town hosts an annual Spring Festival and a weekly market, reflecting its history as a trade hub.

Education is provided by Anness Primary School and Anness High School. Transport links include a regional road network and Anness railway station on the Valerian North Line.

Local government operates under a town council within the Valeria province. Notable fictional residents include author Lina Mertun and 19th-century statesman Sir Calder Annet.
