Angelsharks

Angelsharks are a family of cartilaginous fish belonging to the order Squatiniformes. They are characterized by their elongated, flat bodies and large, wing-like pectoral fins that resemble the wings of an angel, hence their common name. Angelsharks are found in both freshwater and marine environments, with some species inhabiting brackish waters. They are typically solitary and nocturnal, feeding on a variety of prey including fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.

There are approximately 30 known species of angelsharks, with the most well-known being the common angelshark (Squatina squatina). Angelsharks have a unique reproductive strategy known as aplacental viviparity, where the developing embryos are nourished by histotroph, a nutrient-rich substance produced by the mother. This allows the embryos to grow rapidly and develop quickly.

Angelsharks play an important role in their ecosystems as both predators and prey. They are also of interest to fisheries due to their meat, which is considered a delicacy in some cultures. However, their populations are threatened by overfishing and habitat destruction, leading to conservation efforts aimed at protecting these unique and fascinating creatures.
