Amfoterisiä refers to a class of chemical compounds that exhibit amphoteric properties. Amphoteric substances are capable of reacting as both an acid and a base. This dual nature arises from their molecular structure, which contains both acidic and basic functional groups. When interacting with a strong base, an amphoteric compound will donate a proton, acting as an acid. Conversely, when interacting with a strong acid, it will accept a proton, behaving as a base.

A common example of an amphoteric substance is aluminum hydroxide, Al(OH)3. In the presence of a strong acid like hydrochloric acid (HCl), aluminum hydroxide reacts to form aluminum chloride (AlCl3) and water, acting as a base: Al(OH)3 + 3HCl → AlCl3 + 3H2O. However, when treated with a strong base such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), it dissolves to form a soluble aluminate salt, acting as an acid: Al(OH)3 + NaOH → Na[Al(OH)4].

Amino acids are another important class of amphoteric compounds. They possess both an amino group (-NH2), which is basic, and a carboxyl group (-COOH), which is acidic. This allows them to react with both acids and bases. The pH at which an amino acid carries no net electrical charge is known as its isoelectric point. Proteins, being composed of amino acids, also exhibit amphoteric behavior. The study of amphoteric substances is crucial in various fields, including analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and materials science, as their unique reactivity influences chemical processes and the properties of materials.
