Amalfians

Amalfians are the inhabitants or natives of Amalfi, a town and comune on the Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno, Campania, Italy. The term is also used to describe historical residents of the medieval Republic of Amalfi, a notable maritime power centered on the town from roughly the 9th to the 11th century.

Geography and heritage influence the identity of Amalfians. Amalfi lies along a dramatic stretch of coastline facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, within the broader UNESCO-listed Cultural Landscape of the Amalfi Coast. The surrounding area is renowned for steep terraces, lemon groves, and a long seafaring tradition that shaped local culture and economy.

History has left a strong imprint on Amalfians’ heritage. In the medieval period, Amalfi developed as a vigorous trading republic with a capable fleet and extensive Mediterranean connections, negotiating with Byzantines, Arabs, and other Italian powers.
