Alþýðulisti

Alþýðulisti, which translates to "People's List," was a political party in Iceland. It was founded in 1984 by a group of individuals who had left the People's Front of Iceland, a communist party. Alþýðulisti aimed to unite various left-wing factions and appeal to a broader electorate than its predecessor. The party positioned itself on the socialist left, advocating for policies such as social welfare programs, environmental protection, and nuclear disarmament.

In its early years, Alþýðulisti participated in national and municipal elections, though it struggled to gain significant electoral traction. It achieved its most notable success in the 1990 Reykjavík municipal elections, where it won a seat on the city council. The party's influence remained limited, and it faced internal challenges related to its organizational structure and ideological direction.

By the mid-1990s, Alþýðulisti began to engage in discussions with other left-wing parties, including the Social Democratic Party and the Women's List, regarding potential cooperation and unification. These discussions eventually led to the formation of the United Left in 1998. Alþýðulisti formally dissolved in 1999, with its members largely joining the newly formed United Left, which itself later merged into the Social Democratic Alliance. The party's brief existence reflects a period of flux and attempted consolidation within the Icelandic left-wing political landscape.
