Alþingisumboðsmaður

Alþingisumboðsmaður is the Icelandic term for the Ombudsman of Alþingi, which is the parliament of Iceland. This office serves as an independent body responsible for overseeing the conduct of public administration. The Alþingisumboðsmaður investigates complaints from citizens regarding alleged maladministration by government ministries, directorates, municipalities, and other public authorities. The primary goal is to ensure that public authorities act in accordance with the law and established principles of good administration.

The Ombudsman is appointed by Alþingi for a term of four years and can be reappointed. The office operates under the authority of Alþingi and reports annually to the parliament on its activities. Investigations are typically initiated upon a written complaint from an individual or a group who believes they have been treated unfairly or unlawfully by a public authority. The Ombudsman does not have the power to overturn decisions made by public bodies but can issue recommendations for redress or for changes in administrative practices. These recommendations carry significant weight and are usually followed.

The work of the Alþingisumboðsmaður aims to enhance public trust in the administration and to protect the rights of citizens.
