Alumíniumszulfát

Alumíniumszulfát is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula Al₂(SO₄)₃. It typically exists as a hydrated salt, commonly appearing as aluminum sulfate octadecahydrate, Al₂(SO₄)₃·18H₂O, which is a white crystalline solid. It is soluble in water and sparingly soluble in ethanol. Aluminum sulfate is produced commercially by the reaction of aluminum hydroxide with sulfuric acid.

The primary use of aluminum sulfate is in water purification. It acts as a coagulant, causing impurities in the water to clump together, forming larger particles that can then be easily removed through sedimentation and filtration. This process is essential for producing potable water and treating wastewater. In the paper industry, aluminum sulfate is used as a sizing agent to improve the quality and durability of paper. It helps to prevent ink from spreading and makes the paper more resistant to water.

Beyond these major applications, aluminum sulfate finds use in dyeing textiles as a mordant, helping dyes to bind to fabrics. It is also employed in concrete manufacturing to accelerate hardening. In medicine, it has been used historically for its astringent properties, though its current therapeutic uses are limited. It is also a component in some antiperspirants.
