Allegheny is a county of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is located in the northwestern part of the state, in the Allegheny Plateau. According to the 2020 census, the population of the county is approximately 1.1 million people. Allegheny County is the most populous county in the state and is situated across the Allegheny River from downtown Pittsburgh.

The county was established in 1788 from the Province of Pennsylvania and has undergone several name changes since its establishment. The name Allegheny is derived from the Lenape language, specifically the Delaware word "Oley kohckhohck", meaning "mountain divide". In 1798, the county was renamed from Allegheny to Allegheny County, Beaver County, and Lackawanna County, before eventually settling on its current name in 1800.

The county seat of Allegheny County is Pittsburgh, which is also the largest city in the county. Allegheny County has a total area of 724 square miles. The county's landscape has been significantly shaped by the oil, gas, and steel industries, which have left a lasting impact on the local culture and environment.
