Alkuperänimityksiä, in Finnish, refers to geographical indications (GIs). These are signs used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. They serve to protect the reputation of products, prevent unfair competition, and inform consumers about the genuine source and quality of goods.

The concept of geographical indications is internationally recognized and protected under various agreements, most notably the TRIPS Agreement of the World Trade Organization. In the European Union, for example, there are two main schemes for geographical indications: Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). PDO signifies that all stages of production, processing, and preparation take place in the defined geographical area, and the product's characteristics are inherently linked to its origin. PGI indicates that at least one stage of production, processing, or preparation takes place in the defined area, and the product has a specific quality, reputation, or other characteristic attributable to that geographical origin.

Finland has its own system for protecting geographical indications, aligning with EU regulations. These designations are valuable for agricultural products, foodstuffs, and even certain crafts, allowing producers to differentiate their products in the market and consumers to make informed choices based on authenticity and quality. Examples might include specific types of cheese, ham, or berries known for their unique attributes tied to a particular region within Finland. The registration and protection of these indications aim to preserve traditional production methods and local heritage.
