Unlike classical alchemists who pursued the philosopher's stone to transmute metals, alkemists typically frame transformation as material synthesis, energy research, or environmental remediation, often blending empirical methods with symbolic or ritual practices. The spelling with a 'k' is common in modern usage to emphasize a break from medieval tradition and to signal a distinctly contemporary or hybrid approach.

Alkemists may study catalysts, alloys, polymers, or bio-inspired materials, aiming to create new substances or improve processing efficiency. They may also adopt metaphorical frameworks—visualizations, sigils, or ritual cycles—to structure experimentation, reflection, or collaborative projects.
