The Portuguese forces, led by King John I and his constable Nuno Álvares Pereira, faced a much larger Castilian army. The strategic brilliance of Nuno Álvares Pereira, combined with the terrain and the use of English longbowmen, proved instrumental in the Portuguese victory. This triumph solidified the House of Aviz on the Portuguese throne and established a lasting alliance with England.
