Alimini

Alimini refers to a pair of coastal lakes located in the province of Lecce, in the Puglia region of southeastern Italy. The two lakes are known as Grande Alimini and Piccolo Alimini, or alternatively Alimini Grande and Alimini Piccolo. Grande Alimini is the larger of the two and is a freshwater lake, while Piccolo Alimini is smaller and saline, connected to the Adriatic Sea by a natural channel.

These lakes are part of a protected natural oasis managed by the WWF. The area is characterized by Mediterranean scrub, pine forests, and sand dunes, offering a habitat for diverse flora and fauna. Birdwatching is a popular activity in the Alimini wetlands, with various species of migratory and resident birds found here. The surrounding landscape is also significant for its ecological value and scenic beauty.

The Alimini lakes have a history tied to agricultural and fishing practices. Historically, they were used for freshwater harvesting and fishing. Today, while conservation is a primary focus, the region also attracts tourism due to its natural attractions and proximity to the popular coastal town of Otranto. The unique ecosystem of the Alimini lakes makes them an important natural heritage site in the Salento peninsula.
