Aleatoricism

Aleatoricism is a philosophical and artistic concept that emphasizes the role of chance and randomness in creative processes. The term is derived from the Latin word "alea," meaning "chance" or "dice roll." Aleatoricism gained prominence in the mid-20th century, particularly in the fields of music, literature, and visual arts.

In music, aleatoricism is often associated with composer John Cage, who incorporated chance and indeterminacy into his compositions. His "Alea" piece, for example, relies on random procedures to generate musical patterns. Other composers, such as Pierre Boulez and György Ligeti, have also employed aleatoric techniques in their work.
