Alcántara

Alcántara is a municipality in the western Spanish province of Cáceres, within the autonomous community of Extremadura. It lies along the Tagus River, near the border with Portugal, and is known for its historic bridge and hillside town center.

The name Alcántara derives from the Arabic al-qantara, meaning “the bridge,” a reflection of the site’s long history as a crossing point on the Tagus. The area has ancient roots, with Roman-era activity linked to the bridge and the valley. The Puente de Alcántara, a Roman stone bridge across the Tagus, is the most prominent monument associated with the town. Built in the early centuries of the common era, it exemplifies Roman engineering and has undergone later repairs and modifications in medieval times, continuing to symbolize the crossing point between lands.

Historically, Alcántara developed as a strategic settlement due to its position along the Tagus and as a gateway between the Iberian Peninsula’s northern and southern regions.
