Alberobello

Alberobello is a town and comune in southern Italy, in the Apulia region, within the Metropolitan City of Bari. It lies in the Valle d'Itria on the Murgia plateau and is famous for its trulli, whitewashed limestone dwellings with distinctive conical roofs built without mortar.

The historic center comprises two districts: Rione Monti, which houses the largest concentration of well-preserved trulli, and Rione Aia Piccola, a smaller area with narrow alleys and stairways. The trulli form the town's signature skyline; their dry-stone construction, white limewash, and capped roofs sometimes topped with decorative pinnacles produce a uniform but varied urban landscape.

Inside, rooms are arranged around a central courtyard, and many trulli have been adapted for modern use as homes, shops, or accommodations while retaining their exterior appearance. In 1996, The Trulli of Alberobello were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their exceptional preservation of a traditional building technique and for representing a unique urban culture in Apulia.

Alberobello developed as a rural settlement in the medieval period and today derives much of its livelihood from tourism, with the trulli districts drawing visitors from around the world. The surrounding area also produces olive oil and wine. The municipality has about 10,000 inhabitants.
