Alapkötése

Alapkötése is a Hungarian term that translates to "basic binding" or "foundational binding." In the context of bookbinding, it refers to the fundamental method of assembling and securing the pages of a book. This typically involves sewing the folded sections of paper, known as signatures, together to create a unified text block. The sewn text block is then usually attached to the cover, which can be made of various materials like cardboard, leather, or cloth.

There are several traditional alapkötése techniques, each offering different levels of durability and aesthetic appeal. One common method involves sewing through the folds of the signatures and along the spine. Another approach uses a kettle stitch, a decorative and reinforcing stitch that connects adjacent signatures. The choice of alapkötése can significantly impact the longevity and handling of the book, with more robust methods being preferred for archival purposes or frequently used volumes.
