Akryylihapposta

Akryylihapposta, known scientifically as acrylic acid, is an organic compound with the formula CH2=CHCOOH. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with a characteristic acrid odor. Acrylic acid is a carboxylic acid and a vinyl compound, meaning it contains both a carboxyl group and a double bond. This dual functionality makes it highly reactive and a valuable monomer for polymerization.

Industrially, acrylic acid is primarily produced through the catalytic oxidation of propylene. This process is highly efficient and forms the backbone of its widespread use. Acrylic acid is a key intermediate in the production of various polymers, most notably polyacrylates. These polymers find extensive applications in paints, coatings, adhesives, textiles, and plastics. For instance, they are used in latex paints for their durability and water resistance, and in superabsorbent polymers found in diapers and other hygiene products due to their remarkable ability to absorb and retain large amounts of liquid.

The reactive double bond in acrylic acid readily undergoes addition polymerization, forming long chains. The carboxyl group also contributes to the properties of the resulting polymers, often imparting hydrophilicity and the ability to form salts. While immensely useful, acrylic acid is also corrosive and an irritant, requiring careful handling and appropriate safety measures during its production and use.
