Akronimet are linguistic units formed from the initial components of a phrase, usually the initial letters of words, that function as a shortened reference to a longer term. They are employed to save space and speed up communication in writing and speech. Depending on language and usage, an akronimet may be pronounced as a new word (an acronym) or as a sequence of individual letters (an initialism).

Types and examples: Acronyms pronounced as words include laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) and scuba (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus). Initialisms pronounced letter by letter include FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and USB (Universal Serial Bus). Some terms evolve from initialisms into common words, such as radar or laser, while others remain primarily a spelling of the letters.

Formation and usage: Akronimet are common in science, technology, government, business, and media. First-use should typically be expanded with the acronym in parentheses, especially in formal writing. Style guides may differ on capitalization, punctuation, and whether to include hyphens.
