Aistijärjestelmä, or sensory system, refers to the complex network of sensory organs, neural pathways, and brain regions responsible for detecting, transmitting, and processing sensory information from the environment. These systems enable organisms to perceive various stimuli such as light, sound, touch, taste, and smell, facilitating interaction with and adaptation to their surroundings.

In humans, the principal sensory systems include the visual, auditory, somatosensory (touch, pain, temperature), gustatory (taste), and olfactory (smell) systems. Each system comprises specialized receptors that convert specific types of physical or chemical stimuli into electrical signals, which are then conveyed via neural pathways to the brain for interpretation.

The visual system relies on the eyes, where photoreceptor cells in the retina detect light and color. The auditory system employs hair cells within the cochlea to sense sound waves. The somatosensory system involves mechanoreceptors, thermoreceptors, and nociceptors embedded in the skin and tissues. The gustatory system uses taste buds on the tongue to identify basic tastes, while the olfactory system detects airborne molecules through receptors in the nasal cavity.

Sensory processing is critical for survival, enabling organisms to locate resources, avoid danger, and communicate. Dysfunctions in any component of aistijärjestelmä may result in sensory deficits or disorders, such as blindness, deafness, neuropathic pain, or anosmia.
