Aimagud

Aimagud is a term that refers to a specific administrative division within Mongolia. It is the largest territorial and administrative unit in the country, equivalent to a province in many other nations. Each aimag is further subdivided into smaller districts known as soums. The capital city of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, is administered separately and is not part of any aimag.

The concept of the aimag dates back to the Manchu Qing Dynasty's administrative reforms in the 17th century, where territories were organized for the purpose of tax collection and military conscription. Following Mongolia's independence in the early 20th century, the aimag system was retained and adapted. Today, aimags play a crucial role in the country's governance, responsible for local administration, infrastructure development, and the provision of public services within their respective regions. Each aimag is headed by a governor who is appointed by the central government. The aimags are distinct geographical areas, often reflecting historical tribal or clan territories, and are characterized by their diverse landscapes, ranging from the Gobi Desert in the south to the mountainous regions in the north and west.
