Agrasena

Agrasena, also known as Agrasen or Agrasen Maharaj, is a legendary king from ancient India, often associated with the Agroha community. Historical and semi-mythological accounts describe him as a benevolent ruler who established the city of Agroha, located in the present-day state of Haryana. The narratives suggest he was a successful merchant and a wise administrator who promoted trade and prosperity during his reign.

Tradition holds that Agrasena was a member of the Suryavanshi dynasty. He is credited with the development of a unique social system where each of the 18 castes was assigned a specific occupation, fostering a structured and productive society. His lineage is believed to be connected to the Vaishya community, particularly the Agarwal and other related business communities, who revere him as their progenitor and a symbol of their heritage.

While the historical existence of Agrasena is debated, his legacy is preserved through oral traditions, religious texts, and the cultural practices of communities that trace their origins to him. The city of Agroha, though now in ruins, remains a significant archaeological and cultural site, attracting pilgrims and researchers interested in ancient Indian history and the origins of business communities. The Agrasen Jayanti, celebrated on the tenth day of Ashwin month in the Hindu calendar, is observed by many to commemorate his birth and contributions.
