An age cohort is a group of individuals who share a similar age, defined by a specific age range within a population at a given time. This concept is used in demographic and social research to study how people experience life events, behaviors, and outcomes at similar stages of life. It contrasts with a birth cohort, which is defined by the year of birth; a birth cohort remains fixed as its members age, while individuals move between age cohorts over time.

Cohorts are used to analyze patterns in education, employment, health, consumption, and social attitudes. By examining outcomes by age cohort, researchers can compare experiences across different life stages or across generations that encountered distinct historical conditions. Age-cohort analyses are common in population forecasts, policy impact assessments, and market research, where understanding how groups age can inform planning and strategy.

Methodologically, cohort analysis involves distinguishing age effects (changes due to aging), cohort effects (differences attributable to the experiences of a particular birth cohort), and period effects (events affecting all ages at a given time). Defining the boundaries of an age cohort is a modeling choice and can influence results; cohorts may be defined by single-year ages, multi-year bands, or broader categories.

Limitations include members entering higher cohorts as they age, varying sample sizes, and potential confounding among age, period, and cohort influences. Nonetheless, age-cohort analysis remains a useful tool across demography, public health, marketing, and social policy to understand how age structure and generational experiences shape outcomes.
