Agaune

Agaune is a historical placename associated with the region around Saint-Maurice-en-Valais in Switzerland. It refers to the ancient territory and the population residing there during the Roman and early medieval periods. The name is believed to derive from the Latin word "agumen," meaning "point" or "tip," likely referring to the strategic position of the valley.

Agaune became renowned as a center of Christian martyrdom, famously associated with the legend of the Theban Legion. According to tradition, this Roman army, composed of Christians from the East, was massacred near Agaune in the late 3rd or early 4th century for refusing to persecute fellow Christians.
