AgID

AgID is the Agency for Digital Italy, a public entity originally named Agenzia per l'Italia Digitale. It is an agency of the Italian Government, responsible for the development and management of the country's digital infrastructure.

AgID was established in 2012 with the aim of promoting the digital reform and the development of a cloud-based infrastructure for the public administration, with the goal of reducing agency operational costs and increasing the efficiency of government services.

The agency plays a key role in the development and implementation of national digital policies. It works closely with other government agencies, institutions, and public bodies to implement projects and initiatives related to digital transformation, cryptography, and cybersecurity.

Some of AgID's main responsibilities include the development of a joint national plan for the adoption of Government Cloud Services, the management of a National Platform for Security and Emergency and the development of a National Geodetic System. The agency is also responsible for the certification and validation of digital identity certifications for public administration staff.

In 2021, a new law changed the name of the agency to AgID, also broadening its remit to promote the country's digital development outside the public sector. The law assigned new tasks to the agency, such as coordinating the activities of the National Blockchain Observatory and supporting regional development of blockchain technologies.
