Aftoosi

Aftoosi is a term used in some contexts, particularly in older or less common medical literature, to refer to canker sores, also known as aphthous ulcers. Canker sores are small, painful lesions that appear in the mouth, typically on the soft tissues such as the inside of the lips, cheeks, tongue, or base of the gums. They are not contagious and are distinct from cold sores, which are caused by a virus and appear on the external surface of the lips.

The exact cause of canker sores remains unclear, but they are believed to be related to a combination of factors. These can include minor injury to the mouth, such as from accidental biting, dental work, or even vigorous brushing. Stress, certain foods (like acidic or spicy ones), hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies (such as iron, B12, or folate), and underlying medical conditions like celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease have also been associated with their occurrence.

Canker sores typically present as round or oval sores with a white or yellowish center and a red border. They can range in size from a few millimeters to over a centimeter. While most canker sores are minor and heal on their own within one to two weeks, larger or more persistent ones may require medical attention. Treatment usually focuses on managing pain and discomfort, which can be achieved with over-the-counter pain relievers, topical anesthetic gels, or mouth rinses. In more severe cases, prescription medications may be considered.
