Afstandsmål

Afstandsmål is a Danish term that translates to "distance measure" or "unit of distance." It refers to any standardized quantity used to quantify the length or separation between two points. Throughout history and across different cultures, various distance measures have been developed and employed for practical purposes such as navigation, trade, and construction.

In Denmark, as in many other countries, the metric system is the official standard for distance measurement. The primary unit within this system is the meter. Larger distances are typically measured in kilometers, where one kilometer is equal to 1000 meters. For smaller measurements, centimeters and millimeters are used, with 100 centimeters in a meter and 10 millimeters in a centimeter.

Historically, before the widespread adoption of the metric system, Denmark used a variety of older units of distance. These included measures like the alen (ell), fjerding (furlong), and mil (mile), which often varied in precise definition and application. The transition to the metric system aimed to standardize measurements, facilitating international trade and scientific communication.
