AfroBarbadian

AfroBarbadian refers to a Barbadian person of African descent. The population of Barbados is predominantly of African ancestry, with a history rooted in the transatlantic slave trade. Enslaved Africans were brought to the island to work on sugar plantations, and their descendants form the majority of the Barbadian population today. This heritage has significantly shaped Barbadian culture, music, cuisine, language, and traditions.

The African diaspora in Barbados is diverse, with roots in various West African ethnic groups. Over centuries, these influences have blended with European (primarily British) and other cultural elements to create a unique Barbadian identity. Aspects of West African heritage can be seen in the island's vibrant festivals, such as the Crop Over festival, and in musical genres like calypso and soca. The Bajan dialect, a creole language spoken on the island, also carries significant African linguistic influences. While the term "AfroBarbadian" specifically denotes the African heritage of Barbadians, it is often used interchangeably with "Barbadian" given the demographic composition of the island.
