Afkeuring

Afkeuring is a Dutch noun meaning disapproval or rejection; the act of disapproving or withholding approval, typically because something does not meet required standards or criteria. The word is formed by prefix af- attached to keur(en) (to inspect, to approve). It is used across domains to describe a decision to not grant approval, license, or acceptance.

In administrative and legal contexts, an application, plan, proposal, product, or service can be afgekeurd when it fails to satisfy conditions. The decision may be documented with an explanation and may be subject to appeal or objection under applicable rules.

In the context of inspections, the term is common in the Netherlands and Belgium; for vehicles, a periodic inspection that does not meet standards results in an afkeuring; the vehicle is then not allowed to be used until defects are repaired.

In procurement, bidding processes, and quality control, afkeuring denotes rejection of bids or products that do not comply with specifications.
