Afikoman

The Afikoman is a piece of matzah that is broken during the Passover Seder. One half, the larger piece, is set aside and hidden. The word "Afikoman" is believed to derive from the Greek word "epicomion" meaning "dessert" or "after-meal."

During the Seder, the Afikoman is typically hidden by the Seder leader or another adult. Children at the Seder are then tasked with finding the Afikoman. The finder of the Afikoman is usually rewarded with a small prize or privilege. This tradition is often a highlight for younger participants.

Once found, the Afikoman is brought back to the table and is the last food eaten at the Seder. It is customary to eat the Afikoman after the main meal, before the final blessings are recited. This signifies the end of the meal and its unique ritualistic elements. The Afikoman serves as a tangible reminder of the Exodus from Egypt and the hurried departure, as there was no time for the matzah to rise.
