Aerosolforschung, or aerosol research, is a scientific field dedicated to the study of aerosols. Aerosols are tiny solid particles or liquid droplets suspended in a gas, most commonly the Earth's atmosphere. This interdisciplinary field draws upon expertise from physics, chemistry, meteorology, engineering, and environmental science.

The primary focus of aerosol research includes understanding the formation, physical and chemical properties, transport, and interactions of aerosols. Researchers investigate sources of aerosols, both natural (e.g., sea salt, volcanic ash, dust) and anthropogenic (e.g., combustion particles, industrial emissions, secondary aerosols formed from gas-to-particle conversion). Key properties studied include particle size distribution, shape, composition, optical properties, and hygroscopicity.

Aerosols play a crucial role in various Earth systems. They influence the Earth's radiative balance by scattering and absorbing solar radiation, thereby affecting climate. Aerosols also act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nuclei (IN), influencing cloud formation, precipitation, and the overall hydrological cycle. Furthermore, aerosols have significant impacts on air quality and human health, as fine particles can be inhaled and penetrate deep into the respiratory system.

Research methods in aerosol science involve a combination of laboratory experiments, field measurements using sophisticated instrumentation, and numerical modeling. Advances in aerosol research contribute to improved climate models, better air quality management strategies, and a deeper understanding of atmospheric processes.
